How to coach data journalists
March 15 at 10 AM – 5 PM at Södertörn University
The course focused on fresh cases and experiences from editorial leaders that are in the midst of these challenges at their daily work. They have experienced journalism, programming and leadership at both smaller and bigger newsrooms in television, national and regional newsrooms.
They presented their best examples, the tools and the methods they prefer and gave advice on what to have knowledge about, and they discussed the hard realities of leadership and when to seek support, advice and draw the lines facing creative and engaged reporters with a vision and a mission for their work.
In the programme a workshop was held where the participants voiced their concerns and challenges on a more personal level.
The course also introduced senior lecturer and software developer Walid Al-Saqaf at Sodertorn University that shed light on groundbreaking ideas on how blockchain technologies and its application for example in dealing with threats of fake news.
Dan Kåre Engebrektsen (formerly VG, now NRK, Norway), editorial developer who will talk on his awardwinning cases and his journey from programmer to editorial leader. Dan Kåre is a well known figure among data journalist throughout the Nordics.
Kristofer Sjöholm (Sveriges Television, Sweden) journalist and web developer, data visualizations, open data, sustainable developments, smart cities. Former head of SVT Pejl, the data journalism team at Swedish public broadcaster SVT. Kristofer Sjöholm is currently preparing the data journalism for SVT’s coverage of the Swedish elections in 2018 and also lectures at Kalmar University.
Christer Johnsen (Adresseavisen, Norway) head of editorial developments in the Mid-Norway regional morning newspaper. Christer has worked his way from web journalist, developer, project manager to chairing the editorial development team of one of the most forward leaning news outlets in the tech capitol of Norway bringing fresh, new ideas to the table when facing shrinking budgets.
Walid Al-Saqaf, (Sodertorn University) senior lecturer in media technology, journalism, internet and blockchain research. In this course you will have an almost one-to-one lecture on groundbreaking new technologies that goes to the core of publishing challenges, namely trust in the fake news era. Walid is an international authority on the subject and talks from his experience as a scholar in Internet/media, cyber activist, software developer, entrepreneur and tech enthusiast.
The workshop is aimed at editorial leaders on different management levels who lead individual reporters, data teams or investigative groups or have desk responsibility involving editing of data journalism. The course is also of interest for those who aim to boost their competence for future career responsibilities. Also a group of editorial leaders from a cross range of departments who wants to widen their perspectives and competence together were welcome and appreciated.
REGISTRATION & PRACTICAL INFORMATION:
The workshop cost was 2,000 SEK + VAT and included coffee, breakfast sandwich, lunch and afternoon coffee.
There were computers available. For those who brought their own computers, it was necessary to have MS Excel installed.
The course was open to 40 participants. First come, first serve.
